Art Chantry’s extensive body of work (thousands of posters, record covers, and magazines... even barf bags) provides a glimpse into Seattle’s vibrant cultural scene in the 1980s and 90s, reflecting the emergence of Northwest punk and grunge rock, and annual music festivals like Crockshock! These works also demonstrate that image appropriation—to borrow, recycle or sample images and concepts from the surrounding world in the creation of a new work— is hardly limited to the art world.

Amid Chantry’s appropriated sources are wholesome 1950s advertising and grocery store tabloids—usually presented with a sense of clashing social values. These are underscored by techniques like torn-edge collage, taped images, startling juxtapositions, and endless variations on the possibilities of photographic graininess achieved by repeated photocopying. The results alternate between the surgically precise and the roughly thrown-together.
