Portraits of children underwent a change about the time this picture was painted. Typically shown in a simple pose with a charming manner, children were now often portrayed with personality and with objects that helped to define them as individuals. Painters of children also began to compose their picture according to current conventions for adult portraiture: the figure shown full-length and often life-size, positioned in front of elements of classical architecture, with a distant landscape in the background.
