Bowl
800s, Abbasid dynasty (750–1258)
Iraq
Earthenware
Bj Averitt Islamic Art Fund, 1997.220

This bowl above was manufactured in today’s Basra, Iraq, and is among the earliest blue-and-white stoneware known. Potters in the Arab world copied Chinese forms with great ingenuity, but the clay they used was different and the firing temperature was much lower. Therefore, Abbasid dynasty wares did not achieve the purity and quality of the Chinese originals.
