Known Provenance
Sold by Bouguereau to Tooth & Sons, June 5, 1900, mno. 1053, as 'The two sisters' (no measurements). Sold by Tooth & Sons (Blvd. des Capucines) to Knoedler (New York), May 30, 1900. Knoedler lent it for the Universal Exhibition of 1900; arrived in US Dec. 1900, stockbook no. 9332§. Sold to Lawrence C. Phipps [1862-1958], Pittsburgh, PA, May 1901. Inheritance, and then creation of the Lawrence Phipps Foundation, which offered it in 1958 to the Denver Art Museum, Denver, Texas, no. 1958-115.
