Eating Buggers I
- Bruce Nauman, American, 1941-
- Born: Fort Wayne, IN
- Work Locations: Santa Fe, NM
Nauman’s career cannot be easily classified. Perhaps the only phrase that captures the complex nature of his work is that he is consistently inconsistent, jumping from video to installations to drawings to performance art. It is only in looking at the scope of this career as a totality that one begins to understand the conceptual ark that links these disparate and seemingly chaotic individual artistic endeavors together. Nauman stresses the ridiculous sublime and the tragically absurd nature of existence. His art is highly confrontational, obsessive, and often grueling for both artist and audience. For Nauman, the trivial insecurities of life are exaggerated and blown up to outlandish proportions, forcing the viewer to confront his or her own repressed phobias, neurosis, and perversions. The frustration and cynicism of the 20th century postindustrial world is captured through simultaneously playful and yet violent work. His impact on contemporary art cannot be underestimated.
