Inspired by the great masters throughout the art historical canon, Cecily Brown’s canvases pay homage to the past while adding an abstract, feminine touch. In “Broken Lullaby,” we see an abstracted landscape of swirling blues, purples, whites, and blacks. The silhouettes of two figures emerge from the seemingly chaotic scene, one bending forward, exposing a bare backside, while the other stands and places a hand on the tailbone of the folding figure. As complex as the textures in the work are, an overwhelming sense of calm soothes the viewer, as the focus falls on the couple in the center. Brown offers an intimate glance into the connection shared by these two figures having a moment in a moonlit bayou landscape.
Born in London in 1969, Cecily Brown studied art at the Slade School of Art. She currently lives and works in New York and is represented by Gagosian Gallery.
