Display Box (Kazaribako) with Snake Grass and Lozenge Design by Taguchi Yoshikuni (Taguchi Zenjiro), (1923-98) Japan, Tokyo 1964, Showa period Lacquer and gold on wood Funds from the Sam F. and Freda R. Davis Charitable Trust 2011.287a-c For this display box, Taguchi Yoshikuni used an innovative combination of raised lacquer (taka makie), carved lacquer (choshitsu), and cut-gold inlaid lacquer (kirikane). He employed the straight, segmented stalks of snake grass to form a linear pattern that countered the geometric lozenges on the larger sides of the box. Born in Tokyo, Taguchi was designated in 1989 as a Preserver of Important Cultural Property (Juyo Mukei Bunkazai), commonly known as a Living National Treasure (Ningen Kokuho).
