A pioneer of the 1970s Conceptual Art movement, Lawrence Weiner rejected the art object and turned instead to language. For the artist, words and language are the ultimate forms of communication. Defying the traditional idea of sculpture, Weiner’s sculptures are flat, formal arrangements of text, punctuation, and symbols transcribed on a surface. Seeking to create a personal, unique experience for each visitor, he uses words as his medium of choice to guide audiences to construct their own understanding of his work based on personal knowledge and experiences.
