Alexander Calder is an American artist known for being the originator of the mobile, a term first coined by Marcel Duchamp, which often employed motors or other means to create movement. Calder’s non-moving ground works, called stabiles, were also very popular and were involved in the many performances of Calder’s Circus. Snow Flurry, May 14 is a mobile construction of Calder’s suspended high in the air; it consists of white discs and black rods that seem poised to envelop the galleries and the viewers below in a shower of round snowflakes.
