The robe-like shape of this bedcover probably derived from an old practice of piling up clothing to keep warm. Originally, this yogi had a backing and an insulating inner layer. The elegant design of this important dowry item combines three auspicious plants: pine, a symbol of longevity; bamboo for integrity and fidelity; and plum blossoms, valued as the first flower to bloom in early spring. The circular family crest (mon) was used by a number of powerful families throughout Japan.
Known Provenance
Purchased 2008 at dealers' auction in Kansai, Japan by John Ruddy [Santa Fe, NM]; purchased August 2012 from John Ruddy by the Denver Art Museum
