Folding Screen (byobu) with Bamboo in Spring by Shikanji Zuisho (Shikanji Shoichi), (1911-90) Japan, Toyama Prefecture about 1935-55, Showa period Lacquer, silver, eggshell, wood Funds from the David A. Yeakley Bequest 2012.294 Shikanji Zuisho, an artist from Toyama prefecture, decorated this screen with an image of bamboo in springtime, when new shoots emerge from the ground. The bamboo is executed in the burnished sprinkled picture technique (togidashi makie) and eggshell inlay (rankaku). The edges and nodes of the bamboo were inlaid with raised silver, and silver was also used for the screen’s mounts. The extensive use of silver and the bold composition of the screen suggest that the screen was made for submission into an exhibition, not as a private commission.
