In his Meltdown chairs, including PP Tube #1, British designer Tom Price embeds the shape of an Eames armchair — emblematic of post-World War II mass-produced modern American furniture — into a heap of plastics typically used for everyday functions. In this particular example, Price presses a stack of common plumbing tubes into a heated seat-shaped former. The ends of the tubes melt and fuse together as they come into contact with the heated former leaving a pattern of irregular holes on the surface of the molded seat. The Meltdown chairs by Price suggest a critical perspective on the progress and regress brought about by mass-produced objects and an object-obsessed era.
