Surrounding the center Star of Bethlehem are fourteen borders of varying complexity. Numerous squares (each formed from two triangles) create the wider borders; the narrower ones have a streak-of-lightning motif or reciprocal triangles in two different colors. Even the far corner squares are made from minuscule yellow and red triangles, echoing two of the dominant colors used. While the quilt at first appears square, an additional border has been added at one end to make it rectangular.
