Tom Friedman discovers unusual uses for everyday materials in sculpture and takes simple ideas to their extreme. The untitled Styrofoam man is composed of hundreds of tiny balls of the material, which Friedman painstakingly tweezed off a compacted block of the material in an obsessive labor of love. He creates humble but remarkably crafted works, often diminutive like this one. Though they are often humorous, they metaphorically and literally suggest the disposable and fragile nature of the objects he creates.
