Alan Rath channels his technological expertise into making art that asserts the power of the individual in an electronic world. Unlike many technologically based artists, Rath is a confirmed object-maker whose appealingly awkward creations remind viewers that humans understand the world primarily in terms of the body. The chattering mouths and packed suitcases of Family allude to common, if sometimes uncomfortable, experiences, and the piece is a witty yet sympathetic metaphor for the ties that bind us together.
