From the mid-1960s to mid-1970s, Abakanowicz created her eponymous Abakans: enormous, roughly textured art forms that were a combination of weaving, sculpture, and environmental experience. Standing Figure is an example of the figurative sculpture she has explored over the ensuing decades in various media. A human form appears to metamorphose from--or dissolve into--the seemingly unstable and unlikely materials of burlap and sand.
