Inuit graphic art has deep roots in the decoration of bone and ivory figures with both abstract and realistic engraving. In the 1950s artists embraced the opportunity to expand in new directions with government-sponsored formal art training. Today, artists’ cooperatives thrive across the Canadian Arctic, each producing exciting and imaginative images in drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. Legendary Inuit artist Kenojuak Ashevak transfered images of whimsical birds from her imagination onto paper. Ever changing in shape, pose, and color, these fanciful birds are a hallmark of her art.
