Buddhist Saints (Arhats) with Hvashang
Opaque colors and gold on cloth
Gift of May Wilfley in memory of her parents A. R. Wilfley and Addie M. Wilfley
This painting is one of two known survivors from a set of seven banner paintings that represent Buddha encircled by the Great Arhats (Buddhist saints). It shows the Arhats Kanakavatsa and Chudapanthaka seated on thrones and Hvashang, the large-bellied figure, surrounded by playing children. Guardians of the South and East are in the lower corners; in the upper corners are the protector goddess Sitatapatra and the savior goddess Green Tara.
At least 1930s-1974 , May Wilfley [b. 1887, d. 1983], Englewood CO; 1974, DAM collection, gift of May Wilfley in memory of her parents A.R. Wilfley and Addie M. Wilfley.
A note from the Asian art curator (undated, but from the late 1970s-early 1980s) states that the donor Ms. Wilfley had owned the painting for over 40 years before donating it to the DAM.
