In 1837, Alfred Jacob Miller was hired by Sir William Drummond Stewart, a Scottish nobleman, to record his adventures in what is today Wyoming. Back in his Baltimore studio, Miller used sketches and memories from this trip to create larger oil paintings. Miller’s work reveals the influence of his training in France and Italy where he learned the theatrical composition and sensitive color of European Romanticism, a movement that emphasized stimulating a viewer’s emotions.
