In addition to being inspired by prehistoric patterns and forms, Nampeyo revived traditional Hopi pottery-making processes. By 1900, the artist had rediscovered ancient Sikyatki clay sources. Rather than coating her pots with a colored slip, the artist painted her designs directly on the polished clay surface. The yellows, oranges, and reds seen here are determined by the mineral composition of the clay.
Known Provenance
Collected from the Hopi Reservation by Dr. George Phillips, Indian Service Physician, after 1893, probably around, and no later than, 1910; Mrs. F. M. Phillips, Littleton, CO, before 1952; Denver Art Museum, 1952.
