LET’S GO COLORADO! PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST

Have you ever been surprised by seeing a landscape for the first time or excited by discovering something new in a place you have visited before?

Follow in the footsteps of photographers Timothy H. O'Sullivan and William H. Bell, whose work is currently on view here in On Desert Time: Landscape Photographs by O’Sullivan & Bell, 1871-1874, and capture an image that reflects both the bones of the Colorado landscape and your own discoveries in the area and submit it in our Let’s Go Colorado! photography contest*.

Your photograph can be made with a large format camera like the ones used by O’Sullivan and Bell or with your phone—the only restriction is that it be made in Colorado.

How to enter

Once you have your image, you can submit it here or on Facebook. Deadline to enter is September 18.

What you win

Thirty winning photographs will be featured at our monthly late night program Untitled: Stop Motion on September 30. The grand prize winner will also receive a selection of photography catalogs and a private tour of On Desert Time: Landscape Photographs by O’Sullivan & Bell, 1871-1874 with Eric Paddock, curator of photography.

The winners will be chosen by Denver Art Museum’s Photography Department and contacted directly no later than Friday, September 23, 2016.

Why participate

The Denver Art Museum is proud to partner with Your 6 Hometown Toyota Stores to provide opportunities for aspiring artists to showcase their work at the museum through this unique contest.

More about On Desert Time

On Desert Time, on view through January 8, 2017, presents photographs by Timothy H. O’Sullivan and William H. Bell made in the American Southwest, 1871-1874. In those years, O’Sullivan and Bell worked on the Wheeler Survey— a series of expeditions in the American Southwest led by Lieutenant George Wheeler. They documented places, cultures, and geologic phenomena across lands that now lie within Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico, including areas such as the Grand Canyon and Canyon de Chelly. In doing so, they both drew upon the conventions of landscape photography and painting as practiced in wetter, more verdant places and invented new visual forms that responded to the new environments they encountered.
