May 30 update: Here is the program for this month's Untitled.
Get hooked at Untitled #57 (Darn), where you can creatively crochet while munching on cookies and making conversation!
Drop in between 6 and 10 pm to learn how to create crocheted coral pieces to add to The Denver Satellite Reef, part of the global Crochet Coral Reef (CCR) project out of the Institute For Figuring. CCR is a dynamic experiment exploring the intersections of feminine handicraft, marine biology, community art, and geometry through hyperbolic crochet—a crochet technique which creates shapes and patterns that mimic the forms of the ocean’s colorful corals, slimy sea slugs, and plentiful kelp. This summer, Denver is growing its own crocheted coral reef from community contributions. With almost 100 people already involved here in Colorado and over 5,000 people participating in the project world-wide, this is your chance to get creative and join the movement!
Partly focused on raising awareness about the effects of global warming and partly focused on achieving large-scale artistic collaboration, CCR is a great match for a local civic health club, Warm Cookies of the Revolution (CCR, meet WCR). Warm Cookies of the Revolution seeks to engage the public in meaningful (and fun and exciting) dialogue around important community issues by hosting civic-minded “stich 'n' bitch” events around town—and on May 31st in The Denver Satellite Reef. At Untitled #57, Warm Cookies of the Revolution, joined by guest moderators Chris Weed and Jolt from the city’s beautification squad GuerillaGarden, takes on the topic of public art. Who gets to decide what goes up (a.k.a., what about that wild-eyed bucking bronco at Denver International Airport)? Should we institute a popular vote? Who funds these projects? Come share your ideas, thoughts, and opinions while crocheting contributions to The Denver Satellite Reef! Conversations start at 7 and 8 pm. Warm cookies provided, of course.
And be sure not to miss all of the other exciting programs at this month’s Untitled: weave a collaborative tapestry with artist David Johnson of the Handweavers Guild of Boulder; learn how to mend the most common wardrobe malfunctions from Kristen Littlejohn and Stephanie Utely of the Denver Design Incubator; see what inspiration artists Kate Cox and Miriam Basart (together, 2 Brits and a Sewing Machine) took from DAM’s collection; have fun creating comical fridge magnets with Denver Public Library’s Fresh City Life; talk shop with landscape architect Jesse Young; tune in to a new episode of Buntport Theater’s Joan and Charlie; and go behind the scenes with DAM conservators to check out our new textile PreVIEW space.
You can view the event listing on our calendar and RSVP on Facebook.
See you at Untitled on May 31, from 6 to 10 pm.
