About the Course

American collector Duncan Phillips saw art as a vital source of healing, joy, and spiritual nourishment. In The Phillips Collection: Art as Experience, learn about his unique collecting philosophy, experience celebrated artworks on view in All-Stars: American Artists from The Phillips Collection, and discover how artists have explored important issues and what connects us as humans.

All Stars: American Artists from The Phillips Collection is a traveling ticketed exhibition on view November 12, 2023, through March 3, 2024.

Pricing and Registration

The Phillips Collection: Art as Experience is a four-part course. Sign up for courses individually or all four as a package. Pricing is as follows:

  • Tickets for Non-Members are $25 for each course or $95 for all four courses
  • Tickets for Members are $20 for each course or $75 for all four courses
  • Tickets for Museum Friends are $15 for each course or $55 for all four courses
  • Tickets are Students are free (with valid student ID)

Tickets are available to purchase for the full 4-part course (virtually for the first lecture and in-person for the following lectures or virtually for all four lectures).

The Quest for the Best of American Art: Duncan Phillips and The Phillips Collection

In this introductory lecture, Susan Behrends Frank, Curator at The Phillips Collection, will reveal many of the backstories about the American art collection that has been a centerpiece of this Washington, D.C., museum since it opened to the public in 1921.

Painting the Absolute: Music as a Model for Painting

In this lecture, join Jeremy Ney, Senior Director of Phillips Music at The Phillips Collection, to learn about the rich history of association between music and painting, and how the idea of union between the arts was influential to the developments of American modernism and the artistic philosophy of Duncan Phillips.

Circa 1941: Jacob Lawrence’s Migration Series in Context

Between 1940-1941, Jacob Lawrence conceived and executed the 60 small panels that comprise the Migration Series, four of which are on view in All Stars. This talk, led by Dean S. Sobel, Associate Professor of the Practice of Art History and Museum Studies and Art History faculty at the University of Denver, explores how and why this series became so popular.
