Sarah Anschutz Named Denver Art Museum Board Chair

Outgoing Chair J. Landis (Lanny) Martin to Continue Serving on the Museum Board of Trustees

DENVER—March 8, 2023—The Denver Art Museum today announced that longtime trustee Sarah Anschutz, who has served as Interim Board Chair since October 2022, will succeed J. Landis (Lanny) Martin as Board Chair. Martin will continue his ongoing work as a member of the Denver Art Museum Board of Trustees.

Since joining the museum’s Board of Trustees in 2001 Anschutz has been engaged in key milestones including launching the celebrated DAM Uncorked events and activating the annual Collectors’ Choice fundraiser as well as supporting two major capital projects, the Daniel Libeskind designed Hamilton Building and the recently renovated Martin Building. Anschutz has served on a number of boards in the community, with a focus on art and education, including serving as Vice Chair of the Clyfford Still Museum Board of Trustees from its founding through 2019, Board Chair of Kent Denver School from 2018 to 2021, as well as currently on the board of the Anschutz Foundation and Broadmoor Sea Island Company.

Anschutz currently serves as the Director of the American Museum of Western Art in Denver and holds an undergraduate degree in History from Princeton University with a focus on American Art and a Juris Doctorate degree from Stanford University.

"The Denver Art Museum continues to be a place of learning, engagement and creativity for Coloradans and visitors alike, and I look forward to this new leadership role and supporting in the museum into the future," said Anschutz.

Anschutz steps into the role of Board Chair following Martin, who has served as Chairman since January 2013. Martin has been a museum trustee since 1994 and oversaw much of the museum’s transformation into the institution it is today. Most notably, Lanny led the museum’s development and implementation of Vision 2021, the strategic plan for the museum that culminated in the October 2021 reopening of the reimagined Lanny and Sharon Martin Building, a $175 million construction project and endowment campaign to revitalize and expand the campus to serve the community. Lanny and his wife, Sharon, launched the project in 2016 with a generous lead gift of $25 million that saw the Gio Ponti-designed building transform into an international destination. Martin also was instrumental in the museum’s Hamilton Building expansion, which opened in 2006, including securing the titanium cladding for the building.

"I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to lead during such an incredible evolution for the Denver Art Museum," said Martin. "Completing the expanded campus, launching the Free for Kids program and presenting world-class art exhibitions are the accomplishments I’m most proud of. The DAM has grown further into its role as a place for people of all ages and backgrounds to experience creativity, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing where Sarah’s leadership takes us next."
