Everything Under the Sun

This 6-week class will examine concepts of light through camera-less photography, including but not limited to cyanotype, projected homemade slides, and 16mm film. We will explore what it means to live and create as solar beings, in the gravity and thrall of celestial bodies. We will take a multifaceted view of natural and artificial light, reconsidering the way that we interact with objects and the world around us. We will explore patterns and shapes made by botanical, found and collaged objects. As the weeks unfold we will see our prints and slides transformed by projection of light through and onto the art and objects themselves

No prior technical knowledge is required for this class. The class will be broken up into sections of different media with thorough introductions of each medium and viewing of artworks. Students will be focused initially on small experiments, which we hope to incorporate into more experimental, integrated works by the end. With a limited amount of class time each week, we will repeat and return to media and activities so students can legitimately explore the possibilities of a medium and gain some mastery.

  • Class 1: Proto-photographic processes
  • Class 2: Cyanotype experiments
  • Class 3: Screening of "Mothlight" by Stan Brakhage, and painting on film.
  • Class 4: Proto-photographic magic lanterns and filmic processes
  • Class 5: Film media studio day
  • Class 6: Stacey Steers' "Night Hunter" discussion

About the Educators

Common Name Farm is Noelle Trueheart and Phil Cordelli, among other things. They are located physically in Lakewood, Colorado. Farmers for a decade apiece and artists for much longer, the farm is a site for incorporating art and agriculture, a way of addressing the inequities we see in our society through access to healthy food, and a place of learning and support in a variety of ways: from lactation support for new moms, on-farm counseling sessions led by a local therapist, field trips for school kids, educational workshops for adults, and more.

The art that Phil and Noelle make together is not bound by genre or medium. They believe in an art borne of daily curiosity, struggle, work and play, open to surprises, and driven by a desire to connect with the living beings and materials of this world.
