Probably Prince Paul Demidoff [1839-1885], Palazzo di San Donato, near Florence, (?) his sale (Paris, Catalogue de beaux dessins et aquarelles anciens et modernes par...Fragonard...de la vente San Donato, April 27-28, 1874, lot 80 ["Premiere pensee du tableau grave par Mathieu"]); Camille Groult [1837-1908], Paris, as of 1889; by descent to his son Jean Groult [1868-1951]; and to his grandson, Pierre Bordeaux-Groult [1916-2007], until 1984; when acquired by Private Collection (Sotheby's, New York, Old Master Drawings Sale January 28, 2015, lot 106); from which acquired by Esmond Bradley Martin [1941–2018], 2015; gifted to the Denver Art Museum, 2019.
