Born in Matsuyama, FUJIOKA Shūhei studied at the Aichi Vocational Training Institution for Ceramics and also learned his skills from master potter TANIMOTO Mitsuo. He built his first kiln at Iga in 1975 and make both traditional Iga-style pottery as well as original sculptural works. This dramatic work of Iga-ware is one that endured, not only in the hands of artists throughout the centuries, but in the harsh environment of the artist’s kiln. Roughly half of the works that Fujioka Shūhei fires ar destroyed during the process.
