Max Lamb, Scrap Poly Armchair, 2024. Polystyrene and rubber polymer; 37 1/8 × 33 1/4 × 23 3/4 in. Denver Art Museum: Funds from Design Council of the Denver Art Museum, 2024.221. © Max Lamb. Photo by Matthew Praley, courtesy of the artist and Salon 94 Design.
Despite the different shapes of this chair’s components, it sits perfectly level and remains stable. Max Lamb constructed it from scraps of lightweight foam (polystyrene) accumulated from previous projects in his studio. He then coated the surface with a rubberlike material, giving the chair its smooth, unified finish and added strength. By transforming what might otherwise be discarded, Lamb reveals the potential of waste to become functional, durable furniture.
