In the art world, Jay Lynn Gomez (formerly Ramiro Gomez) is most recognized for her large scale acrylic canvas paintings, which often pay homage to California modernists “Lupita” marks an important shift in the artist’s practice with the incorporation of his flat canvas painting techniques into her DIY cardboard aesthetic. “Lupita” tells the personal story of a twenty-one year old janitor who the artist met during a site-visit in Denver. After shadowing the young woman during her shift at the museum, Gomez was struck by the similarities between Lupita and her mother, who is currently employed as a janitor at an elementary school. Gomez inserted a figure pushing a garbage bin above several layers of bubblegum pink sheets of torn cardboard. Reflecting on Lupita as her muse Gomez says, “It’s important for me to highlight these people that are not going to be recorded in art history.”
Jay Lynn Gomez was born in 1986 in San Bernardino, California.
