“Making furniture that lasts a long time is ultimately going to be the best path to sustainability.”

The word “concrete” conjures images of durable structures and massive buildings. However, an increasing number of designers employ it to build one-of-a-kind objects and furniture. In 2014, Scott Bennett created an entirely new type of concrete reinforced with carbon fibers—which offers advantages over glass or steel. The lightweight, strong, and efficient material can be cast very thin. The chair even appears light—the narrow seat rests on a cluster of walnut legs, locked in place by a 3-D printed plastic connector.
