Ernest L. Blumenschein and his family made Taos their full-time residence in 1919. His daughter, Helen, recalled that he began to produce “large oil paintings, all of them now more and more symbolic. Suddenly they were intense in color, three dimensional in their rendition.” Blumenschein often spent years developing his paintings. He began this work in 1920, calling it Trail Through the Canyon, and continued working on it until 1929 when he renamed it Landscape with Indian Camp.

Ernest L. Blumenschein y su familia se instalaron en Taos de manera definitiva en 1919. Según su hija, Helen, comenzó a producir “grandes pinturas al óleo, todas ellas cada vez más simbólicas. De pronto, tenían un color intenso, tridimensional en su ejecución”. Blumenschein solía pasar años desarrollando sus pinturas. Comenzó esta obra en 1920, llamándola Sendero por el cañón, y continuó trabajando en ella hasta 1929, cuando la renombró Paisaje con campamento indio.
