Ernest L. Blumenschein and his family made Taos their full-time residence in 1919. His daughter, Helen, recalled that he began to produce “large oil paintings, all of them now more and more symbolic. Suddenly they were intense in color, three dimensional in their rendition.” Blumenschein often spent years developing his paintings. He began this work in 1920, calling it Trail Through the Canyon, and continued working on it until 1929 when he renamed it Landscape with Indian Camp.
