Solon Borglum combined his real-life experience as a Nebraska rancher with French academic training. This dynamic sculpture was the first he exhibited in Paris while studying there from 1897 to 1902. With all four feet off the ground, the upper horse and rider appear nearly airborne. The taut, extended rope held by the lower rider suggests the capture of an unseen horse.
