C. Paul Jennewein created this sculpture for the pinnacle of the World War I Tours American Monument in Tours, France, where the gilded version can still be seen today. The smooth, graceful forms of this work indicate Jennewein’s indebtedness to Art Deco, an early-twentieth century style that reinterpreted the clean lines of classical Greek, Egyptian, Native American, and other sources for a modern machine age.
