Wang grew up in the aftermath of China’s Cultural Revolution. Critics consider him a vital pioneer of video art in China, particularly in the use of digital technology. His pieces investigate individuality in a post-communist society, the relationship between cultures and the lighter side of reality. "Blind Talker" depicts a conversation with a blind man but includes fantastic elements because “blind talk” also refers to nonsense speech in Chinese.

Born in Beijing in 1960, Wang earned his BFA at Capital Normal University, China in 1982 and studied at the State University of New York.
