As an artist, Rupprecht Matthies combines sculpture with the power of language and shared creative processes to empower and engage communities. The artist's 2009 ¿Being Home?, created especially for the Denver Art Museum, continued Matthies's discussion on the resonance of language and community collaboration to show just how powerful art can be. Matthies collaborated with Denver-area community groups, including the African Community Center and the Emily Griffith Opportunity School to gather meaningful words generated by the participants. The installation resulted in a web of words in the form of mobiles, trees, and pillows that reflected not only the artist's personality, but the life experiences of the co-creators, and the commonalities shared among people across the world.
