1500s, Ming Dynasty
Gift of Jan and Frederick R. Mayer
This blue and white dish, recovered from the San Isidro shipwreck off the coast of Philippines, is a fine example of Zhangzhou ware exported from China during the late 1500s. The interior of this dish is decorated with a character reading "fu" (blessing) enclosed within two rings painted cobalt blue. The short ring foot of this dish has residue of sand, a result of the firing process and a characteristic of Zhangzhou porcelains.
