Nampeyo (Hopi), Jar, c. 1905. Clay and paint; 3⅞ x 9⅝ in. Denver Art Museum: Gift of Virginia Vogel Mattern, 2003.1165
Nampeyo's artistic interests were not confined to surface design but also included form. She reintroduced the beautiful low, wide-shouldered jars characteristic of the ancient village of Sikyatki. Producing the flattened shoulders required great skill and patience to prevent the wet clay from collapsing as successive coils were added.
