Display Tray with Open Weave by Hayakawa Shokosai V (b. 1932) Japan 1996, Heisei period In memory of Paul M. Hoff Jr, gift of Paul M. Hoff III and Hazel Hoff 2001.667 In 2003, the Japanese government designated Hayakawa Shokosai V as a Living National Treasure – the popular terminology for a “holder of important intangible cultural properties.” This distinction has been conferred upon a small number of individuals since 1955 for their unique skills in traditional Japanese arts. This display tray is made for arrangements of fruit, vegetables, berries, nuts, leaves, roots, and other non-floral plant parts (morimono).
