Although contemporary, this blanket is based on a Vallero pattern, whose origin is attributed to the northern New Mexico village of El Valle. The eight-pointed stars, one in each corner and one in the center, are thought to be originally copied from an Anglo-American quilt. They are united with Saltillo hourglass motifs. The white, grays, and black are undyed Churro sheep wool, while other colors come from natural dyes: brazilwood, chamisa blossoms, cochineal, and indigo.
