This was one of the first bronze statuettes to be cast in the United States, and it heralded what would become a rich tradition of American bronze casting of western American subjects. Traveling to Michigan’s Mackinac Island, in Lake Huron, Brown was among the earliest sculptors to observe Chippewa (Ojibwe) and Odawa people firsthand. Here he unites his observations with the graceful pose of classical Greek sculpture to produce an idealized, European representation of an Indigenous man.
