Paintings of archangels became particularly popular in all areas of Latin America during the colonial era. In colonial Peru two artistic centers developed, one in Lima with heavy European influence; the other in Cuzco and the surrounding highland areas of the Andes mountains (including Bolivia), which incorporated stronger native inspiration and employed many native artists. In the highland areas a distinctive style of painting evolved that combined European artistic traditions with details from native Incan iconography and included the extensive use of gold decoration on paintings.  The lack of gold details and native iconography indicates that this painting is from one of the schools of painting in Lima, dominated by emigrant artists from Europe, including the son of the famous Spanish artist, Bartolome Murillo.  To date, very few of these artists or their bodies of work have been identified, making this an important piece for future research.
