Ewer Korea 900s-1000s, Goryeo dynasty Bronze Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Heitler 1979.103 This wine pot, a fine example of Korean metalwork, has a hinged lid topped by a lotus bud knob. Its distinctive shape, which originated in China, also appears in Korean celadon-glazed ceramic wine pots. Several centuries later, the form was adopted in Japan, where Buddhist priests used the bronze ceremonial vessels as containers for water to cleanse their hands.
