Shawls of such great length were intended to be folded and arranged in various ways to complement the wide-skirted fashions of the 1850s and 1860s. The long, attenuated paisley motif took its initial inspiration from shawls woven in India. The accompanying print from Le Moniteur de la Mode (March 1857) illustrates how this shawl might have been worn.
