This elegantly shaped club is a wonderful example of the sculptor’s art in which form and function are masterfully joined. As a utilitarian weapon it has a large and heavy ball-shaped head, while the perfectly arched and tapered handle is powerfully completed with the head of an animal.
Known Provenance
Found on the Gilchrist farm, adjoining the Braddock battlefield, PA. Mrs. S. Effie, Denver, CO, between 1936-1951; Denver Art Museum, 1951.
