Overview

View artist Barbara McCullough’s sixty-minute film, Shopping Bag Spirits and Freeway Fetishes: Reflections on Ritual Space, which features an interview of artist Senga Nengudi. A brief excerpt of the film is featured in the current exhibition Senga Nengudi: Topologies.

The film opens with footage from McCullough’s own project, Water Ritual #1: An Urban Rite of Purification—an instrumental work in the development of Black and feminist experimental filmmaking.

Throughout the course of the film, McCullough pieces together footage, interviews, and photographs showing artists addressing topics related to spirituality and ritual. Most of the enactments were staged using found objects in abandoned sites destined for demolition, which served both to honor the desolate spaces and as a form of social resistance.
