Where Paper Meets Ink: Gelli Printing

Overview

This 4-week class will engage the most vital parts in art, including but not limited to texture, color, theme, and layering. Gelli printing is the process of using ink on top of a gelatinous surface and removing and adding color to create imagery. Bringing objects, stencils, and your own artistic flair will aid in elevating this fun and easy process. Each class is broken down into a focus that highlights the benefits of gelli plate monoprinting, and gives time for the students to think about their layers as the class moves forward. Students may participate in an exchange of work during the final class.

This class is meant to engage with experimentation to develop a series of works speaking to individual goals. Completion of the class will give students a strong selection of finished artworks. At the end of class, there will be an option for exchanging work with one another. Exchange is a vital part of printmaking as it is a way for the multiples we create to be viewed and engaged with in various settings. We will discuss exchange and its function further during the four class sessions.

Class Timeline

  • Class 1: Experiment with color to develop a palette
  • Class 2: Integrate texture, combining that of the first class to create a cohesive movement and feeling within the work
  • Class 3: Spend time integrating stencils into previously-made work
  • Class 4: Final touches to the editions and the exchanging of work

Materials: Most materials will be provided by the educator and are reflected in the materials fee of $100 associated with this class. Students will purchase the remaining materials on their own.

Allanna Austin

About the Educator

Alanna Austin is a printmaker and multimedia artist from Boulder, Colorado. She is currently a master of fine arts candidate at the University of Colorado Boulder. Austin is the founder of the Western Printmaking Alliance that acts as a conference for artists to come together on a digital platform once every other year to discuss their work and techniques. Alanna Austin is also the current Mid America Print Council Archivist for 2020-2022. The focus of her art practice is the expression of mind and self via storytelling through understanding dreams and memories past and present. Austin’s work resides in archives spanning the United States such as the Norlin Special Collection in Colorado, Matrix Press in Montana, and more.

Connect with professional creatives, learn a new skill, and expand your own creative practice in 1-day, 4-week, and 6-week creative classes at the Denver Art Museum. These classes are taught by practicing artists in a studio art environment in the Creative Hub, located on level 1 of the Martin Building.
