Overview
On the fourth Tuesday of every month, join writing instructors from Lighthouse Writers Workshop for an informal writing session that encourages participants to explore their creativity through the written word. Bring your own writing projects or get started on something new. Open to all levels, from the occasional journaler to published authors. Materials provided when onsite.
For the next online session, we will explore colonialism's perils and the collective's possibilities for women, in honor of Women's History Month. Two-Spirit, and trans sovereignty through writing prompts inspired by Near East to Far West: Fictions of French and American Colonialism. Like the exhibit, this Drop-In Writing experience curates a space to explore "a narrative closer to reality and away from colonial fantasy" (Dana El Masri).
The writing prompts examine the influence of the odalisque—a frequent motif in Orientalist art—of a woman in a female-only domestic setting or harem, incorporates ai images of today's world if Indigenous matriarchies were never conquered, and experiments with the writing exercise the Mvskoke poet, Jennifer Elise Foerster, featured in the exhibit, used for with poem "Us" as Foerster wrote "for our urgent speculations of a future where the "we" must be reconceived."
