Demonstrating Artist: Juan Fuentes

About the Artist

Juan Fuentes is a photo-based artist born in Chihuahua, México and raised in the Northside neighborhood of Denver, Colorado. His kinship to the barrio is evident within his photography, installations, and community projects which explore intimate stories of everyday life of immigrants and Chicanos in the U.S. Utilizing photographs, Juan examines the visual and emotional artifacts of memory, erasure, and family—creating records that affirm and center marginalized communities.

A desire for personal connection motivates the subjects Fuentes choses to photograph and how he presents his work. More recently, Fuentes is diving into narratives that address the lives of individuals who are undocumented while living in the United States. Inspired by his work as an educator of young people, he is shifting his practice more towards building relationships, and less about capturing moments out in the street.

Juan has exhibited at various institutions and galleries in Colorado including Denver Art Museum, History Colorado Center, Museo de las Américas, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, RedLine Contemporary Art Center, Dateline Gallery, Alto Gallery, Dairy Arts Center and ReCreative Denver. His photographs are also part of the photographic archives at the University of Colorado Boulder and part of the Abarca Family collection housed by the Latino Cultural Arts Center. Primarily working with still images, his work also expands into installation, murals, books, film and archives.
