Children drawing at the Denver Art Museum

Day at the DAM

Sessions for Ages 6–7

Comic Books and Art

Kids will learn a basic breakdown of comics storytelling (panels, speech bubbles) then start with creating a character. Each child will have materials to make up whatever sort of comic they want.

Led by Jolyon Yates:
Jolyon is a professional illustrator who studied art & graphics in England (where he was born) and in Japan. His illustrations have been published in graphic novels such as the NYT bestseller LEGO Ninjago comics, Jumanji, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles books. His more recent works include an animated episode of Creepshow, stories for an educational comic book for Pop Culture Classroom, and illustrations for Gamera: The Complete Collection.

Storytelling in the Museum

Meet and work with a real Cuentista del Arte (storyteller of art). Children will craft their own story inspired by art in the galleries and perform it at the end of the day.

Led by Laura Chavez:
Laura is a Latino theatre artist. She has experience and training obtained in many years as an educational theatre actor and facilitator. Laura is a firm believer in working with kids in such a way that creates trust and fun and inclusion because that's when amazing things can be accomplished and created

Sessions for Ages 8–9

Create Your Own Exhibition

Kids will be assigned iPads to use to create their own virtual museum. They will go around the DAM and take photos of their favorite pieces to use to curate their own virtual museum or gallery show.

Led by Yazmin Atmore (Yazz):
Yazz is currently an Art teacher in Denver, Colorado where she mentors and creates with young artists as they explore their lives, stories, and passions through the beauty of art. Constantly inspired by the youth she works with, Yazz continues to develop & deepen her own artistry as an analog collagist and muralist
