About the Curator
Raphael Fonseca is Curator of Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art at the Denver Art Museum. Since his arrival to the musuem, he has curated the exhibitions Sandra Vásquez de la Horra: The Awake Volcanoes (2024), Who tells a tale adds a tail: Latin America and contemporary art (2022), and gallery rotations in the John & Sandy Fox Gallery of Latin American Art on level 4 of the Martin Building.
In 2024, he was also selected to be chief curator of the 14th Mercosur Biennial, in Porto Alegre, Brazil. He is a researcher in curating, art history, art criticism, and education, and specializes in the relations between art, visual culture, and history in their various conceptions. The juxtaposition of different temporalities and how this can trigger contemporary reflections for audiences is crucial in his practice. Humor, absurdity, pop culture, and the notion that an exhibition relates to the ideas of assembly, set design, and spectacle have grown among his research interests.
He works with artists from everywhere but with a more significant focus on the ones born and/or based in the so-called Global South. In 2023, he was in ArtReview’s Power 100 list of most influential people in the contemporary art world which called him "an international force for South and Central American artists."
